iOS development - do I really need to test all the devices?

I currently have a growing list of devices that are to be tested in my iOS app, ranging from the iPhone 3G (iPhone 1) to the new iPad (iPhone 4).
My question is this: with all the iOS devices and apps that are available, and even more new ones that will be available in the future, do I really need to test everything?
Can I just get started with a bunch of devices, and leave the rest for later?


It's good to have some sort of internal quality control to prevent your app from becoming a bloated mass of bugs or a performance killer. But, you can get by with a limited number of devices. Just test on the one or two you want to support initially and add more if and when it makes sense.


It is always better to test on different devices than to test on same device.
This is because different device performance, usability and user experience is different.


Honestly, I would say NO - you don't need to test on all of them. The number of devices you need to test is related to the complexity of your application. The more complex your application is, the more devices you need to test.
I find that I'm testing on almost every device I have available to me.
